Instant Replay in baseball

The ump said after the game: “What I saw was Molina blocked the plate and Nava’s foot lifted. But in the replays, you could clearly see Nava’s foot got under for a split second and then lifted, so I was wrong on my decision. From the angle I had, I did not see his foot get under Molina’s shin guard.”

Today 8/15 the baseball owners will be pitched (pun intended) the challenge system instant replay like the NFL does.  Joe Torre put the proposal together and said all options were being considered, including an NFL-type system that would give managers the ability to challenge a limited number of calls in each game.

I think one of the major concerns about instant replay is slowing the game down.  Lets face it one of the biggest arguments about why American’s are moving away from baseball  to football is because it is slow, boring, and long.  Having a bunch of umps standing around a TV analyzing a foul ball for 5 minutes when we can take one look at on TV and know the result.  I get it.

  • The Human element argument. Human error is part of the game.  We don’t want PEDs in baseball because then the people playing the game are not like us they are enhanced.  Mistakes are part of the game.  It gives sports writers something to talk about. – its part of history and deep in baseballs roots.
  • What is the difference if a computer calls balls and strikes if its quick and always accurate?  Do you care about the guy wearing black behind the catcher?  Probably not, until he doesn’t make the call you want.  - In reality the Umps have a pretty strong union so I don’t see a computer replacing their primary job.
  • What about having some guy up in the booth who watches the same TV feed and does a quick review to determine if the player beats the ball to the bag?  Something where the umps don’t have to walk off the field?
  • They haven’t released the details of the Torre’s proposal but a challenge system would be a good start.  However, my request to MLB – don’t have the umps walk off the field, take the 20 sec it takes us as viewers to determine if there is irrefutable evidence!
